Thursday, October 26, 2017

Vancouver, BC: October 26, 2017 – The Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) recognized the finest in B.C.’s construction industry at its 29th Annual Awards of Excellence, held last night at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

This year’s competition attracted more than 95 entrants and shone the spotlight on 50 projects representing approximately $1.1 billion in construction value.  A total of 25 awards were presented including 15 Gold Awards, 9 Outstanding Achievement Awards, and a Heritage Award.

"VRCA’s Awards of Excellence showcase the best of the best,“ said Fiona Famulak, President of the VRCA.  “BC’s construction industry is the most progressive in the country and the Awards allow us to recognize the collaboration, innovation and professionalism that our members bring to their projects - the complex, state-of-the-art infrastructure that we use every day," she continued.

Standout projects included the TFN – Tsawwassen Mills Mall, The HUB located at King George Station Phase A: Coast Capital Savings and the Langara Science & Technology Building, each receiving several Silver Awards and one Gold Award.  In addition, projects such as the W.A.C. Bennett Dam Spillway Chute Upgrade and the Squamish Terminals - Berth 1 Reconstruction were recognized.

Keith Plumbing and Heating Co. Ltd. and Houle were among the evening’s top winners.  Keith Plumbing and Heating Co. Ltd. won two Gold Awards in the Mechanical Contractors Award – up to $3 Million category for the Surrey Bio-Fuel Processing Facility, and in the Mechanical Contractors Award – Over $8 Million category for the North Island Hospital Project – Comox Valley, in addition to three Silver Awards.

Meanwhile, Houle won Gold in the Electrical Contractors Award – Up to $2 Million category for the Prince Rupert Airport Terminal Upgrade and Gold in the Electrical Contractors Award – Over $8 Million category for the North Island Hospital Project – Comox Valley. Houle also won a Safety Award for their superior safety record in the category of Trade Contractor 200,000 or more person hours, and four Silver Awards.

This year, the judges reviewed and recognized a truly impressive project submission that did not fit into existing award categories. Scott Construction Group, Deltec Electric Ltd., Kits Glass, Solid Rock Steel Fabricating Company Ltd., and Tek Roofing received a Heritage Award for their restoration work on the Christ Church Cathedral Restoration & Renewal project.

“This year’s Award winners demonstrate that the industry is embracing more innovative practices when it comes to environmental sustainability,” said Tony Everett, Chair of the Awards of Excellence Judging Panel. “There was an increasing number of LEED projects and a real effort by the industry to reduce the environmental impact of projects through use of new materials and technologies that both enhance the quality and economics of projects and drive value to owners.”
